Death Knights A Threat To Feral Druids Everywhere?

Reading the interview of Warcry.com with Jeff Kaplan about the latest he could reveal about the next expansion WoTLK, one statement of his got me thinking.

We made some really good strides in The Burning Crusade to improve the feral druid as a hybrid tank/dps class. That will be the general direction we’ll be looking to go with the death knight.

Based on what we know about the Death Knight class already and this statement, I think it’s safe to say that the Death Knight class will be able to tank and dps in the same spec, just like feral druids who can switch between the roles with a simple gear switch.

Of course we don’t know this for sure. But what led me to this assumption was the fact that the Death Knight will be able tank using a 2 hander instead of a 1 hander + shield setup. Feral druids also do the same thing but with a 2 handed mace or a staff.

Adding another tank/dps hybrid to the game come expansion will indeed give us more flexibility our party formation. My concern though is that if I’m right about Death Knights and Feral Druids sharing a similar role and therefore the same flexibility as a tank/dps hybrid, then feral druids will see a reduced demand especially in instances wherein a feral druid would be able to tank an encounter just fine but a death knight could do it better. So while death knights will add another option for tanking classes in the game come expansion, it will also pose a threat to other tanks looking for spots in a group. This is even more true for feral druids who seem to be the most threatened by the similarity in role and flexibility with Death Knights.

What do you think?

Druid tanks will suffer in no way due to the addition of another tanking class. With the addition of the deathknight tanks parties will gain a tank that is better at certain things and weaker at certain things. Certainly it will increase the tank population, but many deathknights will be DPS spec and not want to tank. The addition of deathknights simpley helps to alleviate servers that have a low tank population (like mine).

Now that more information has been released about the DK’s niche in the tanking world, I realize that the DK won’t really be a threat but more of another option just like the bear tanks and prot pallies became in TBC.

Based on what I’ve seen though from the DK info though, it seems like while they can do some tanking and dpsing at the same time in the same spec, it seems like it’s not in the sense that feral druids do it wherein a the same spec really is both a tanking and dps spec and a change of gear is all it takes to make it effective. It seems that the DK will have separate tanking and dps trees just like the warrior does.
