“Gear Reset” Confirmed For WoTLK Expansion
For those who played in the pre-TBC days, I’m sure you remember going into the Outlands decked with your cool gear from Molten Core, Zul’Gurub, and for some even from BlacKwing Lair and Naxxramas and then seeing that gear get rapidly replaced by greens from quests and the auction house. This is called a gear reset and CM Bornakk confirms that the same thing will happen when the WoTLK expansion comes out.
Also “resetting” the gear helps even out the playing field which can especially be helpful for new characters (Ex. Deathknights) or people who want to get into raiding. Those who want to be on the bleeding edge will get back to it, but I don’t think it hurts anything to do this. No items you get make you permanently great, you need to keep playing to maintain awesomeness.

As someone who has never reached the the hardest raid dungeons in the game both in pre-TBC and now, I’m always for a gear reset every expansion. Everyone knows that just a small percent of the playing population ever reach the hardest dungeons in the game. This means that if there was no gear reset then majority of people who play the game will be terribly mismatched against those who raided the hardest dungeons. A gear rest is an opportunity to level the playing field so that some players won’t have a huge advantage over others. It’s totally ok that the guys with t6 and sunwell plateau gear have an easier time as they level to 80 because of their gear but it’s not if such gear will still contribute a huge difference in their playing experience at 80. Ths is why a gear rest is needed.
Anyway, part of the fun is replacing your gear with better and better items and seeing what difference it makes in your performance. Seeing greens do much better than your old epics is part of that fun. I know it was fun for me when TBC came out.

The same thing happened when TBC came out so it’s really nothing new. I totally expected this.

Well I was mixed. I had several level 60s when TBC came out. Only one of which was well geared from raiding. For him there were no real upgrades for all his quests and dungeon runs for the first 4-5 levels. So it made those levels somewhat boring.
Now for my other less geared characters it was great fun gearing them up with items that were previously out of their reach.

My mage had some MC gear coming into TBC but even then I had some gear that needed replacing badly. The first quests in hellfire changed that. While leveling my pally I liked the gear that I was getting early on in hellfire but since I was a holy pally only some of the gear i was getting i could actually use. It was still great though.
