Improved Scorch Change Doesn’t Make Sense

by Angelo on August 30th, 2008

In the circle of people I hang out with in the game quite a number of including one of my characters are mages. Some are frost, some are fire, and a few are arcane in talent build. This means that whenever I’m in a 10 man raid or even just a 5 man dungeon there’s bound to be more than one mage in the group. I don’t see this changing when the Wrath of the Lich King expansion comes out.

With the change that the debuffs generated by Improved Scorch and Winter’s Chill would affect fire, frost and arcane spells in the last build, I was beginning to see Frost and Fire mages complementing each other in raids and groups. Fire mages would benefit from the increased crit chance of Winter’s Chill while Frost mages would benefit from the increased damage from Improved Scorch. I was beginning to envision that this type of synergy between the two types of mages would be a great thing for both until they changed things in the latest beta build, build 8885.

Basically Improved Scorch was changed to increase crit chance instead of damage, making it no different from Winter’s Chill. Since these two provide the same effect, they won’t stack. I know Blizzard wants more flexibility when it comes to the classes and they want more than one class to provide a certain buff but I don’t think they remember that Moonkins can provide exactly the same thing, except it’s much better. Improved Scorch and Winter’s Chill provides only a 2% increase in spell crit chance while the aura people get from Moonkins give a 5% increase in spell crit. If you’re a frost or fire mage and you have a Moonkin in your party too, your Improved Scorch or Winter’s Chill is useless.

Congratulations Bliz for ruining a good thing!
