My Problem As A One Dimensional WoW Player
I have a friend in the game who has a character for every single class and while they’re alts not a single one is a very low level one. The last update I got was he has a level 70 paladin and a level 70 mage while also having a level 60 hunter and even a few alts in their 30’s and 50’s. To make things short, he mentioned he doesn’t have a single alt below level 25.
I’ve always heard that to get a good feel for a certain class, you have to play it to at least level 20. There’s truth to that since certain key abilities don’t come out until you hit 20 like cat form for druids, flash heal for priests, flash of light for paladins and a lot more. This means that to play every class to level 25 and beyond means my friend is pretty flexible in his tastes for his role in WoW.
Sometimes I wonder how some people, like my friend, can seem to play all the roles the game has to offer and pretty well too. My experience in WoW has really been from the DPS perspective since I’ve never really experienced healing and tanking the way I would want to. Having a warlock for a main alt right now doesn’t help my cause to experience the other roles either. The real problem with me and some other people I know is that we’ve become so comfortable and used to the DPS role that tanking and healing seems like it’s a hundred times harder. I’ve tried healing before in the teen levels and found it not only boring from doing nothing but playing whack a mole with the health bars but also odd since my usual instinct is to look at the enemy’s health being DPS.
It is for this reason I salute the people who play druids well. By that I mean the druids who have explored and tried every role the druid can be as tank, DPS, and healer. I salute these guys for their flexibility in playing the game. Of course I also include here the people who have successfully filled the role of tank, healer and DPS on separate classes.
Are you like me, a player who really just knows how to play one role in the game? If you are, what are your experiences? How has having a self-imposed limitation to the class you want to play affected you?
My next project will be to play my level 15 tauren druid more seriously and hopefully get it to 70 one day so I can brave into to world of tanking and/or healing and be good at it.

I have just recently leveled up a holy pally to 70 to see what the healing end is like. It really is a totally different world from my DPS warrior. Oddly enough, I really haven’t explored tanking much at all even though I’m a warrior.

tanking on my 42 warrior has been fun from the start, I was protection or a few level stints, in order to get the rotations down. i am one of these filling every role types. my mains are a 70 rogue and hunter who’ve tried all the trees, however, i have a 52 mage (have made about 3 that were 30+), whos tried all the trees, the warrior whos tried all the trees, my 2 paladins (54, and 31, 52 is prot, leveled 1-48 holy, ret from the get go til 26 as the 31, have tried ret numerous occasions on the 52), the warlock who is 52, who’s tried all the trees but dearly loves affliction. the only two I have no real experience with is a driud and shaman, and that is only because I have been to lazy to make a shaman (now have a 12), and druid forms look too crappy for me to want to play on (have a 14). I however did get my cousins druid from 67-69 as feral. point being, don’t think of the people who can do this as a gift, it is, however it is also a curse. i would love to devote a lot of time to my hunter due to how intricate it is if you really want to play well, but i can’t. i just love all the roles too much and i am what you would call an alt-who*e. makes for keeping friends and the ability to play with a competent group pretty much out of the question. keep in mind its wow, it isnt that hard, but you first just have to understand how things work. Mechanics are everything past that its just a pretty button, or an ugly button.
