No Reduced Costs For Flying Mounts (For Now)
Prior to the release of the Burning Crusade, epic ground mounts were pretty to get for the casual gamer. The total cost of training and the mount itself was 900 gold with the reputation discount. Personally, the most I ever had during those days was 300 gold and I was considered rich by my friends. But when the Burning Crusade expansion came out, it became much much easier to grab myself an epic ground mount because of the reduced cost of the training and much cheaper if you just pay for the training and PvP for the mount itself. Would flying mounts see the same fate when Wrath of the Lich King comes out? Apparently not.
As Dominitus stated the mount costs going from the original game to BC was lowered to make it a smooth transition ranking through the mount riding skills. Really that ’smoothing’ of the riding skill progression, now that it was being extended, was because there was somewhere for it to extend to. Flying mounts were being added. If you start a new character you can get your epic ground mount right around 60 without too much hassle, and then on to your flying mount at 70 without too much hassle.
So really, the lowering of the cost of the flying mounts would really depend on the riding skill being extended further, and at this time there are no plans to do so.
That’s bad news but it does make sense. Saving up for the flying mount for when you reach 70 was an inconvenience but it’s not totally a pain. The flying mount is a major expense at 70 and if there won’t be a certain mount we have to save for at 80 then there’s not much reason to lower the costs of the flying mounts. I’m sure by the time we’re 80 that 5000g cost of the swift flying mounts would be cake!
