NPC Punching Bag?

by Angelo on April 19th, 2008

Deamion from US-Bladefist realm writes about a personal NPC punching bag in this post.

i would think to get better familiar with the char your working with we should have npc to practice on its alot easier with no distraction of people talking crud etc to get the mechanics of your character

He gets this reply from CM Bornakk:

Generally speaking the mechanics and actions of a fight against an NPC is pretty different compared to PvP fighting. The skirmish Arena modes are available for you to get practice in and get used to all of the options your character has available.

That said we will consider this for the future but I can’t make any guarantees on it.

Having your own NPC punching bag all to yourself without any interference would be a nice way to test your skills without having to go out into the hostile world of the arena tournament. But as Bornakk mentioned earlier, testing your skills on an npc for pvp just won’t give you the right kind of experience you need. One instance this would be really helpful with is testing out a new spec.

Let me expand the idea even further to make it worth while. Let’s not limit the possibilities to just pvp and the arena tournament. One of the things I really hated while leveling up my paladin was the lack of healing practice. Without a good healing set and speced the wrong way, I never dared go into an instance to heal. But i knew I needed the practice some time. Having a bunch of npc’s fulfilling several roles would have been nice to give me healing practice. Let’s say one npc is the target, the other is a tanking npc and another is a dps npc. Being the healer in this group would give me the interactivity to see what healing is like without harming anyone. This is way better than getting your initial practice in a real live encounter and causing wipes. The same goes for tanking practice.

I’m sure having these punching bags to give you the starter’s practice you need to fulfill a new role would be so helpful. it gives you some experience while also giving you the info you need to decide whether or not you like a certain spec or role before causing more harm.

Sadly, the closest thing I have to an NPC punching bag is poor Gamon in the Orgrimmar Inn.

But the idea of having your own NPC to duel with would be very exciting. Makes it * a little* easier to consider a respec if you know that you can try out the play style right away too, imo.

And at 70, using Gamon as a punching bag just doesn’t cut it lol
