Professions: Looking Back To Inspire The New
The latest information about the professions for the Wrath of the Lich King expansion reminds me of the saying “we need to know where we’ve been to know where we’re going”. This is usually used as an explanation about why we need to study history but it’s true even for video games. We’ve seen Blizzard use what they’ve learned in the past to improve the game. But for some reason, what I saw from the new ideas for the professions makes me feel very excited about how they reinvented their old ideas to turn them into cool, fun and exciting ones.
Info below is from MMO-Champion
Alchemy
The alchemy discovery system had great promise. But for something that was supposed to “you’re lucky if it happens to you but if it doesn’t, it’s nothing big”, what you could potentially get are some really great flasks and such. This leads several raiding alchemists to force the issue and make endless amounts of stuff just so that the discovery can happen. Now alchemical discoveries will no longer apply to important recipes anymore and will be more predictable or used for fun recipes only. as it should have been from the start.
The discovery system also probably won’t be unique to alchemy anymore. All professions could adapt this cool idea and like the alchemical discoveries, they would be just for “fun” recipes or more predicable.
Blacksmithing
Everyone who played Diablo 2 will remember that you could go to an NPC in the Act 1 camp and socket a weapon once every difficulty level. When jewel crafting came out, I was actually expecting that you could get your weapons and armor socketed.
The time has come. All blacksmiths will be able to add sockets to weapons and armorsmiths can add meta slots to armor.
Engineering
Engineering will be able to add “enchantments” to their gear that has effects of engineering items like that of parachute cloak. This is a different way for engineers to have some fun!
Tailoring
Engineers won’t be the only ones with a craftable flying mount. Tailors will be able to make their own flying carpet!
As you can see, Blizzard added some interesting things to the professions that were inspired by old ideas. I’m sure we’ll see more of this sort of additions to the game in the future.
