Reflection On 25 Man Raids

The WoW TBC expansion brought about the change in the developers’ thinking about big raids with the biggest raid size for PvE content being 25 as opposed to the 40 man raid dungeons such as Molten Core and Blackwing Lair of the old content. Here are a few thoughts about the change in the raid size cap.

I can see why the 40 man raids were not continued. Simply, it’ tough to get 40 players of the right class balance to show up for the raid and what more they need to be decently geared for them. It’s for this reason that only the biggest guilds really ran them while smaller guilds were happy going through the 20 man raids, most especially Zul’Gurub. But one of the things I really liked about the 40 man raids was that more guild members could experience the content in one run. Even if they’re not getting loot for the run, they’re there experiencing the content and sharing in the glory of the kills for the night.

25 man raids are easier to put together because the size requirement is smaller. It’s for the same reason that some guilds can even have two or even three Karazhan groups running at the same time. It just requires less people. But unlike Karazhan, guilds don’t have two 25 man raids running at the same time (at least not that I know of). If getting people to run 40 man raids was a pain, Two 25 man raids is even harder. the effect of this is that much less of the guild’s members get to experience the content every run. More people are left out and for those guys who want to raid all the time, getting a raid spot is not always a guarantee unless you are part of the guild’s core of players.

In the end, 25 man raids seem to be the way for the future since it’s logistically easier to set up. But at times I feel sorry for those guys who are left out.

I still think 25 is an illogical number. The proper progression should be 20 man raids so that groups 1 and 2 from Kara can mesh up and head to the next step together. Having to leave out 5 members or struggle to find 5 members creates unnecessary drama and stress. I wish Blizzard would realize this.
