Riding Crop’s Future
Unless you’re a high level paladin with access to crusader aura, trinkets like carrot on a stick and riding crop have been really useful for getting to places quicker by increasing your mounted speed. None of my characters have the epic flying mount yet so I haven’t experienced it myself but other people tell me that epic flyer + riding crop is really awesome!
The only problem about the riding crop is the fact that it’s a trinket, taking up one of your two trinket slots. It’s hard sucks to be brought into a situation that takes you into combat with your riding crop/carrot on a stick on. I also know of some people who get caught in the middle of a raid with it on because they forgot they had it on and didn’t replace it with their regular trinket they use for that slot. Well it looks like something is going to done about this annoying problem, according to lead designer Jeff Kaplan (Tigole).
The jury is still out on what’s going to happen to the crop. We hope to have a solution soon. The main goal was to get the riding crop out of the trinket slot. It’s very common to end up in combat with a riding crop equipped which wasn’t very fun. It was also tedious to have to swap trinkets everytime you mounted (even with a mod like Outfitter or with macros).
We ran into some technical issues when we switched over to our new mount system. So the crop is somewhat in flux. The main design goal is “not a trinket”. source
I think I have a nice solution for this problem. I actually wrote something before about possibly using the Diablo 2 charms system for World of Warcraft. I think a revised version of this idea might solve this riding crop problem. I was thinking that maybe certain items that are trinkets now could actually be turned into charms that stay in your inventory but to prevent players from stacking too many charm effects, maybe you could put a limit to the number of effects that can be on. Perhaps the system could be that all charms need to activated/deactivated before you can use them. Aside from things like carrot on a stick and riding crop, I was thinking maybe even the PvP trinkets (Insignia of the Horde/Medallion of the Horde and their Alliance counterparts whose names I can’t remember right now) could be turned into charms.
What do you think about this idea? Do you have another idea to solve the riding crop problem?

I’ve only just got a riding crop so it’s a little strange to be hearing about changes being made, however as long as the actual benefit doesn’t disappear, that is the main thing as it’s taken a while to get my riding crop!
If it works without taking up a trinket slot though, that would make it even better!

I don’t have a riding crop but the druid I’m leveling is using a carrot on a stick now with no other competition for trinkets. It’s really great to be able to have the effect all the time so I’m really hoping for something like my idea to happen.
