Statement On Purchasing Gold and Power Leveling Services

Money makes the world go round. In the case of World of Warcraft, it’s gold. Whether it’s to pay for your repairs, your training, gear or that nice epic flying mount you always wanted, gold is important to keep you going. This why things like daily quests and the auction house are very handy for earning the gold for your needs.

However, some players prefer to take the short route and buy gold from the internet. These are the people Blizzard hates. At first I thought that this was just some rule they made up to keep the playing field level so that not one person has a clear advantage over the other and also so that the server economy wouldn’t get drastically affected. But after reading the statement on Purchasing Gold and Power Leveling Services that they released, I realized that there’s a more serious reason why they hunt down these people with such ferocity.

What many people don’t realize when buying gold is the large impact it has on the game economy, and also how the companies selling gold obtain it. Our developers, in-game support, and anti-hack teams work diligently to stop the exploits these companies use and help players who have become victims of their services. We regularly track the source of the gold these companies sell, and find that an alarmingly high amount comes from hacked accounts. These are the friends, relatives, and guildmates you may know who have gone through the experience of having characters, gold, and items stripped from them after visiting a website or opening a file containing a trojan virus. Our teams work to educate players and assist them in avoiding account compromise, but the fact remains that the players themselves are often these companies’ largest target as a source for gold, which the companies then turn around and sell to other players.

Knowing now that you could very well be hacked by the same people who you could be buying gold from should put some fear on players who are thinking of taking the short cut in game. For me, it was important that Blizzard came out with this statement so that players will really understand that their war against gold sellers and third party leveling services is really a serious matter.

We also want players to recognize that these companies often employ people to do their work through the use of disruptive hacks in the game, which can cause realm performance and stability issues. The companies essentially take time away from our development and in-game support efforts as we work to stop their exploits and assist players who have become their victims in recovering characters and items. They spam advertisements, use bots that make it hard for players to find the resources they need, and raise the cost of items through inflation.

Truly all players are affected by the work of these people. If anything, don’t you want those characters spamming these things in the major cities to go away? Help Blizzard fight their war and ultimately you will benefit.

I’ve always thought about buying gold but never did. It’s not worth getting banned for. I was lucky enough to get a 2K loan from a friend of mine who is a major raider and has more gold than time to spend it. Once I got my epic flying mount, making the gold back was alot easier and faster. Not to mention you get like 1-2K from the netherdrake dailies to get your mount. I didnt think getting a mount would make as much of a difference but it has. Plus, there is no need to use the flight masters anymore….Unless you want to go get a cup of coffee.

When I first started I thought gold was so hard to come by which it was but only because I was new. Gold buying was tempting especially since I just wanted to play and not have to grind for gold just for repairs and reagents. I am glad I never bought gold as it is that much more satisfying to do it all myself. With that being said, knowing what I know now I am able to make plenty of money in game with little effort and time and do what I like to do which is play my toons.

I did notice those google ads about selling wow gold. Even wowinsider has them so it really can’t be done away with hehe. It’s funny

I remember when I was leveling my mage who was my first character to get to 60, I was so poor I had to borrow mount money from a friend. I was paying all the way to level 47 but it’s satisfying to see that I did it on my own.
